Why Values Matter More Than Words on a Wall

Have you ever considered that values are not just some fancy phrases stuck on a wall? They are the very lifeblood of a thriving culture. It’s a bold statement, but one I firmly believe in. After all, values shape our decisions, influence our actions, and ultimately determine the success of any organisation.

I recently had the chance to chat with the leadership team at City Skills, and we dove headfirst into this essential topic. It all started with a seemingly simple question: *How do we truly define our values?* As the conversation unfolded, I realised it was far from simple.

What Do We Hold Dear?

Values emerge from what we genuinely hold dear. They are more than cosy words strung together; they are reflections of our character. During our engaging debate, one key point rose above the rest:

– **Ownership Mindset**.

This is where the magic happens. When each team member embraces an ownership mindset, they begin to see the business as their own. It’s not just about clocking in and out; it is about cultivating a culture where each person feels invested and motivated to contribute.

Let’s be honest—how often do we see teams aimlessly doing their jobs, while the most important aspect, their values, sits neglected? This is a missed opportunity. Values should energise your workforce, guiding them towards a common goal. Just think about it: if every person is on the same page, the synergy can create real, transformative change.
