Great Training: Bring Back Your Childlike Curiosity

Let’s be honest: most training sessions feel like a long slog through thick fog. You sit there, half-asleep, trying to absorb information you’ll never use. But what if I told you the key to engaging training lies in the simple joys found in a child’s busy board? It sounds bizarre, doesn’t it? But bear with me!

Recently, I had the delightful experience of watching my grandson explore one of those vibrant busy boards. Picture this: 13 switches, 24 LED lights and a whirlwind of excitement. His eyes sparkled as he experimented with every button, flipping switches as if embarking on an adventure. It reminded me of how powerful curiosity can be—especially in learning.

Why Training Should Be Engaging

At City Skills, we take inspiration from these moments. Our training design isn’t about lecturing or endless PowerPoint slides. Instead, we believe training should be as engaging as that busy board. Here’s the thing: when people are engaged, they absorb information naturally. Think about it—when was the last time you learned something valuable while nodding off in your seat?

Engagement taps into that childlike wonder within us. It encourages participants to ask questions, explore and most importantly, enjoy the process of learning. Isn’t that what we all desire? When learners are active participants instead of passive listeners, the transformation is incredible.

Fostering Exploration Through Trial and Error

Now let’s talk about exploration. In my grandson’s case, he wasn’t afraid to press a switch multiple times to see what would happen. That willingness to experiment is golden. It’s a reminder that mistakes are merely stepping stones on the path to mastery.

In the world of training, encouraging participants to try, fail, and try again creates a fertile ground for growth. While fumbling around, they discover pathways and solutions that are uniquely theirs. This is where true learning happens—in that messy space between failure and success.

So, what if we made every training session interactive? Imagine flipping switches to see how concepts connect, lighting up ideas just like those dazzling LEDs! It’s about creating an environment where learners feel free to explore and engage fully, without the fear of judgement.

Building Confidence Through the Playful Lens

When we take a step back and allow participants to dive in, something magical occurs. Confidence blooms as they begin to own their learning journeys. Skills flourish when individuals feel they have the agency to experiment and discover. Each “light bulb moment” they experience boosts their self-esteem and reinforces their abilities.

As someone who has spent years in the learning and development sector, it has become clear to me that effective training balances structure with freedom. It’s like navigating through a playground—there need to be boundaries, but there should also be room for play.

So I ask you this: if you could revisit your childhood curiosity and engage with a busy board, which part would capture your attention first? Would it be flicking switches and watching lights dance or perhaps plugging things in to see how they connect? Each option invites exploration and discovery!

Conclusion: Let’s Reinvent Training Together

In conclusion, let’s aim to transform our approach to training. Embrace engagement, encourage exploration and foster a culture where mistakes are not only accepted but celebrated. It’s time to make learning as fun and enlightening as a child’s busy board!

What about you? How do you think we can bring that playful spirit back into learning and development? Let’s spark a conversation!
