Recently, we were discussing casual office attire and whether the way people dress influences how clients perceive them. It’s a debate many organisations continue to have as workplaces evolve and expectations change.

The conversation raised an interesting question. Does someone’s appearance really affect their expertise, their ideas, or the value they bring? More importantly, does organisational alignment come from looking the same, or from believing in the same purpose?

Returning to that meeting where my attire was scrutinised, I found it amusing how the external factors held such significance for some. What struck me most was how I’d feel if I had to adopt a different outfit just to fit a mould. I’d lose a piece of myself, and that would undermine the very purpose I champion—being authentically aligned in what matters.

In closing, perhaps the question every organisation should ask is not, “Do we look aligned?” but, “Are we aligned on what truly matters?”
