Employers Must Step Up — Our Youth Deserve Better

Let’s face it: when it comes to youth employment, we’ve fallen short. The recent announcement by the DWP about creating job placements for young people is a start, but at just 1,200 placements out of a staggering 55,000 needed, it feels a bit like putting a sticking plaster on a gaping wound. We can do better, and we must do better!

Why Does Youth Employment Matter?

When I look at the younger generation, I see a wealth of talent waiting to blossom. These young people aged 18 to 21, many of whom have faced tough competition for over a year, deserve more than being sidelined in the job market. If we ignore them, we are wasting not just their potential, but also the potential of our economy. It’s a no-brainer: a thriving workforce contributes to a flourishing economy.

Just imagine what the landscape could look like if businesses stepped up to provide significant opportunities. By truly committing to youth development, we could enhance our industries and foster a more vibrant future. But how do we get there?

Collaborate Locally for More Placements

One of the most effective ways to tackle this issue is through collaboration with local organisations. Make no mistake, it’s time to roll up our sleeves and work together. Whether you run a small business or are part of a larger corporation, partnering with local charities or educational institutions can create a ripple effect of opportunity.

Think about it: local insights paired with your expertise can yield placements that align with the needs of both the youth and your organisation. It’s like a double win, isn’t it? And don’t forget, these collaborations can bring fresh ideas and innovation to your business as well.

Invest in Skills Training

The next key piece of the puzzle is investing in skills training that fits within industry needs. Too often, we hear tales of young individuals lacking the skills employers crave, but that situation can change. By helping the next generation to acquire relevant skills, you’re ensuring they can step competently into roles that matter.

Whether through workshops, seminars, or online courses, the message is clear: when we invest in their future, we’re investing in our own. And let’s not underestimate the importance of hands-on experience; it’s invaluable. Employers can provide not just jobs, but also internships and apprenticeships that allow young people to learn while working.

Mentorship — Guiding Young Talent

To make a real difference, fostering mentorship programmes is essential. Sure, it sounds good on paper, but the beauty is in the doing. A mentor can be an invaluable resource for a young person. They offer guidance, share experiences, and provide insights that are often only accessible through years of experience.

In my own career, I’ve had mentors who shaped my path, nudging me in the right direction when I lost my way. Offering mentorship isn’t just about charity; it’s about creating a culture of growth and learning. It can profoundly impact a young person’s confidence and skills, preparing them for the challenges ahead.

What Can You Do?

So here’s the question for you: how are you planning to engage with the next generation in your organisation? It’s time to move beyond mere conversation. Let’s be proactive in creating pathways for our youth’s success. Whether you can offer internships, mentorship, or collaborate with community organisations, every little effort counts.

At City Skills, we’re passionate about equipping young people with the skills they need for a bright future. If we all take a step towards supporting our youth, imagine the difference we can make. Together, we can pave the way for a stronger workforce and a more robust economy.

What’s your next move? Let’s turn our goodwill into action and create opportunities for our young people. The future is waiting, and it’s time to make it shine!
