Embracing Individuality: Tailoring Team Development to Unique Learning Styles
Are You Really Developing Your Team Based on How They Learn?
Let’s get straight to the point: if you’re still using a one-size-fits-all approach to team development, you’re missing out. It’s high time we stopped relying solely on comfortable methods that have been ingrained in us over the years. It’s 2023 and the way we learn and grow is as varied as the people sitting in your office. So, the burning question here is, are you genuinely catering to your team’s unique learning styles, or are you just sticking with what feels safe?
Understanding Learning Styles
Recently, I found myself in a stimulating session with a leadership group at City Skills. We took a bold leap to move away from traditional training approaches and explored a more nuanced understanding of how individuals thrive. This wasn’t just a buzzword exercise; it was essential to nurture each person in a way that resonated with them.
Let’s delve into the four main learning styles we identified, each with its own flair:
- 🛠️ The Builder: This person learns best through hands-on experience. Give them a project and watch them thrive.
- 🧠 The Thinker: Deeply analytical, thinkers need to grasp the concepts and theories before diving into action.
- 👀 The Observer: They’re the ones who prefer to watch from the sidelines, absorbing information and learning from others’ experiences.
- 💬 The Connector: Connectors are natural collaborators and shine brightest when discussing ideas with their peers.
Why Tailoring Development Matters
Understanding these learning styles is more than just interesting trivia. It can be a transformative moment for your team. People are more engaged and motivated when they feel their unique needs are considered. When you tailor development efforts to match these styles, you’re not just improving skills; you’re boosting confidence and, ultimately, performance.
Imagine the Builder who has been pushed towards theoretical training but craves hands-on learning. They likely feel stagnant, and you may not even realise it. By recognising their learning style, you can set them up for success, perhaps by involving them in more practical projects or workshops. This applies to all learning styles—small adjustments can make a monumental difference.
How Can You Support Each Learning Style?
So how do we move from understanding to action? Here are a few practical strategies to consider for each type:
- Builders: Create opportunities for them to engage in real-world projects. Give them ownership of tasks where they can experiment.
- Thinkers: Provide them with resources and time for reflection. Encourage them to consider the theory behind tasks before executing them.
- Observers: Allow space for them to shadow others in their roles. Pair them with experienced colleagues for mentorship.
- Connectors: Facilitate group brainstorming sessions. Ensure they have plenty of chances to discuss and collaborate on ideas.
A Personal Insight
When I first started my career, I often gravitated towards the familiar. I routinely leaned on my style of learning without giving thought to others. It wasn’t until I witnessed a diverse team flourish because their unique learning styles were respected that I realised how transformative this approach could be. Everyone has something valuable to offer, and aligning development methods with their strengths can create a thriving environment.
Take Action!
Now that you know the importance of personalised development, take a moment to reflect on your team. How are you currently supporting their unique learning styles? Are you still in that corporate comfort zone, or are you ready to embrace a fresh, tailored approach? If you’re intrigued about discovering both your own and your team’s learning styles, I’d be thrilled to share the questionnaire we’ve developed at City Skills to help with that.
Let’s spark a conversation. How do you adapt your development strategies to nurture individual learning preferences in your workplace?
