Stop Overthinking and Start Testing: A Lesson from Aqua Class

Have you ever joined a class or workshop, only to find yourself wondering if the instructor had actually tried it out before? Recently, I found myself floundering in an aqua class where the instructor’s moves just didn’t translate well to the water, and this sparked an epiphany. The experience illuminated a vital lesson for anyone in business leadership, particularly those in HR: Action speaks louder than theory.

The Value of Testing

As I flailed about, trying to keep pace with the rhythm of the class, it became glaringly obvious that our instructor hadn’t tested her routine. You see, in the world of HR, much like in group exercise, you can’t just rely on what looks good on paper. You’ve got to dive in, test it out, and see if it actually works in practice. It’s like if you were launching a new wellbeing initiative or performance evaluation method without truly understanding your team’s needs.

Think about it: how many initiatives are floated around your workplace that sound wonderful in theory but crash and burn in implementation? Without testing, we run the risk of introducing products and policies that don’t resonate with our employees, leaving them feeling confused or disengaged.

Keep Your Eyes Open

The second realisation was that our instructor wasn’t really looking. She was so glued to her script, she didn’t notice that the class was struggling to keep up. In business, it’s vital to stay aware of how your team is responding. Their body language, feedback, and even their enthusiasm can provide essential clues about how your initiatives are landing.

So, ask yourself: are you tuning in to your team? Are you observing their reactions and adapting accordingly? Keeping your eyes open to the ebb and flow of your workplace culture can be the difference between a thriving initiative and one that flops.

The Power of Listening

Finally, our aqua instructor fell short on the listening front. There was absolutely no space for feedback. No check-ins to gauge how we were managing the routine. As leaders, it’s crucial to foster a culture of open dialogue where team members feel safe to share their thoughts and experiences. This means not only inviting feedback but actively encouraging it.

When was the last time you checked in with your team? Did you ask them how they feel about current policies or programmes? It’s these conversations that cultivate trust and drive engagement. After all, teams that feel heard are far more likely to invest their energy into driving the organisation forward.

Embracing Change for Genuine Impact

This brings me back to my personal journey with City Skills and beyond. I’ve learned that developing dazzling programmes is only half the battle. It’s essential to stay grounded in the real experiences of our teams. To connect our initiatives with what truly benefits them, we must iterate based on their feedback.

Don’t follow in the footsteps of that aqua instructor; instead, embrace the cycle of testing, observation, and active listening. Happy teams lead to successful initiatives. It’s a beautiful synergy that creates a thriving workplace culture. Imagine how much more engaged your employees would feel if you embraced this approach.

So, I leave you with this question: What’s your current strategy for ensuring your ideas truly resonate with your team? Are you ready to stop overthinking and start testing?

There’s something liberating about letting go of the need for perfection and diving into real-world experimentation. Who knows what gems you might discover when you take that leap?
