Is Revision Just a Filler? Let’s Discuss What Really Matters

There’s a cheeky little secret in the world of education: revision is too often treated as an afterthought. Seriously, it’s like that leftover vegetable casserole you keep in the fridge, promising to eat but usually ignoring. At City Skills, we’ve taken a long, hard look at “off-the-job training,” and I can’t help but feel that we’re missing a trick when it comes to revision. It shouldn’t just be a box to tick. It needs to be the jam in our educational doughnut.

Let’s face it: when someone mentions “revision,” does your mind race to a pile of paperwork, or a swathe of textbook pages? I reckon many of us hope it evokes focused study sessions and the thrill of grappling with new concepts instead. And yet, too many learners find revision tedious, filled with activities resembling busywork rather than meaningful education.

What Does Effective Revision Look Like?

The big question is, how do we change this perception? Effective revision should be a fusion of purpose and structure. It’s not about filling time but about cultivating new skills and behaviours that align with the standards we aim to achieve.

You see, during our discussions with the Department for Education, one thing became crystal clear: revision needs to be purposeful. We shouldn’t conflate hours spent with actual learning. After all, what’s the point of clocking in extra time if we’re just spinning our wheels? Real revision leads to real growth.

It’s high time we start viewing revision as an integral part of the training cake rather than just icing on top. When we incorporate revision into a training plan, it transforms from a dull chore to a valuable activity. Your learners won’t just remember the hours they spent; they’ll remember the skills they developed and the confidence that grew alongside them.

How Can Providers Make Revision Meaningful?

So, how do we, as training providers, cook up a more effective approach to revision? First and foremost, we must ensure our training plans are strategic. This means asking ourselves tough questions, like: does this activity lead to learning? Is it aligned with the goals of the training programme?

Your students will appreciate a more engaging and insightful learning experience. It might even become a highlight rather than the dreaded task they’d rather skip. If we want our learners to embrace revision, we have to package it well. That might mean mixing in interactive sessions, real-world applications, or even gamified elements.

Building revision into the core of what we offer not only maximises engagement but empowers learners. It creates an environment where they feel supported, knowing they’re not just filling time but genuinely advancing in their pursuits.
