Challenging the Unwritten Rules: Cultivating Clarity in the Workplace

Ever Found Yourself Caught in the Web of Unwritten Rules?
How many times have you felt like you were following a set of unwritten rules that no one had the courage to question? I had a rather eye-opening experience the other day in Pune that I can’t help but share over a cup of coffee. It all started when I hopped into an Uber and expected a straightforward ride. Instead, I got an auto driver who firmly declared, “Sir, we will go by meter.” Now, I’m all for flexibility, but this caught me a bit off guard.
When I pointed out my pre-booked fare, he simply retorted, “You can cancel that.” Interesting, isn’t it? It made me pause and think deeply about how sometimes we inadvertently adopt practices that become the norm without questioning their validity. I initially considered hailing another auto, only to be met with the realisation that it would also “go by meter.” How fascinating that these unwritten policies shape our behaviours without us even realising it!
The Hidden Influence of Unwritten Rules
This encounter got me reflecting on our workplaces. Just like my auto driver clung to that unwritten code, businesses often establish cultures that tacitly dictate how we should work and interact. These norms can serve as a double-edged sword. On one hand, they provide a sense of order; on the other, they can stifle creativity and open dialogue.
Ever noticed how some teams are hesitant to voice new ideas? It’s often due to the unwritten rules that dictate how things should be done. These unspoken guidelines can run the risk of becoming more powerful than the established procedures we consciously define. If we’re not careful, we’ll be stuck in a rut, unable to innovate or adapt.
So, what does this mean for leaders and teams? Understanding the difference between established processes and the unwritten rules is crucial. The culture you cultivate shouldn’t just be about following a script but about fostering an environment where everyone feels safe to ask questions, challenge the status quo, and understand the ‘why’ behind practices.
Shaping a Culture of Clarity
Creating an organisational culture that thrives on clarity means encouraging open communication. Teams should feel empowered to discuss these unwritten rules. What practices are hanging around that may not serve us anymore? It’s time to shine a light on these habits and see if they hold water.
- Are there regular meetings that feel unnecessary?
- Is remote working still met with side-eyes despite proven productivity?
- What about those silent agreements about who gets to speak in meetings?
These often go unchallenged, yet they can significantly impact morale and engagement. I remember a time when I caught myself doing things a certain way just because “that’s how it’s always been done.” It’s liberating to break free from those shackles and reconsider what truly works for the team.
A Call for Reflection
If there’s one concept I want to impart from my Pune experience, it’s this: we need to encourage a climate of curiosity in our organisations. Rather than just adhering to the unwritten rules, let’s invite discussions about them. What new ideas could emerge from challenging the norm?
As you wrap up your day, consider this: What unwritten rules do you see in your industry that could benefit from a fresh perspective? Engaging in those conversations can lead to incredible breakthroughs. Let’s work together to shape cultures that embrace clarity over conformity.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. How have you challenged unwritten rules in your life or workplace?
