Why Ageism Is One of the Most Absurd Forms of Discrimination

Imagine walking into a room full of eager, talented people, each with their unique story and skillset. Now, picture someone being dismissed simply because they’ve celebrated more birthdays than others. Sounds absurd, doesn’t it? Sadly, this is the reality for many individuals who face ageism—one of the most outdated forms of discrimination we grapple with today.

At City Skills, we’ve encountered countless brilliant minds passed over for opportunities simply due to their age. It’s maddening. We’re all heading in that direction—if we’re lucky, of course. So why are we still clinging to these outdated beliefs that suggest older means less capable?

What’s the Deal with Ageism?

Too often, I’ve caught wind of comments like, “We need someone young and fresh,” or “You’re not quite energetic enough for this role.” Seriously, are we still using age as a measuring stick for talent and capability? Let’s get this straight—age does not dictate creativity, energy, ambition, or potential. It’s merely a number. A person’s worth cannot be quantified by how many candles are on their birthday cake.

I recall a moment in my own career, when I was deemed “too inexperienced” because I was younger at the time. Fast forward a few decades, and I now see the irony—isn’t that just the universe having a laugh? Experience and knowledge come with age, but they come through opportunity. And every person, regardless of age, deserves an equal shot.

Why Skills Matter More Than Age

Instead of fixating on someone’s age, why not focus on their talents? Skills, experiences, and aspirations should be what we prioritise. We need to celebrate the wealth of knowledge that every individual holds. Take, for instance, someone who has spent decades honing their craft. Their insights can be invaluable, offering perspectives that a younger person might not yet grasp.

People of all ages bring something unique to the table. It’s time we shift the focus from ageism to valuing the rich tapestry of experience each individual possesses. Here’s a thought: instead of dismissing older candidates, let’s actively seek them out. Why not blend seasoned professionals with fresh talent for a dynamic work environment? Now that’s a recipe for success!

Challenging the Outdated Assumptions

So how do we shift the narrative? It starts with awareness. We need to recognise that age should never dictate someone’s worth or limit their opportunities. Are we ready to challenge these outdated assumptions together? I genuinely believe that if we unite to uplift all individuals—regardless of age—we can create an expert-driven workforce that thrives. Imagine the innovation that could sprout from a diverse age mix!

It begins with each of us examining our own biases. The next time you find yourself labelling someone based on their age, pause. Ask yourself if that really reflects their potential. Encourage conversations that highlight skills over numbers, experiences over years. Let’s champion a culture where everyone can thrive, irrespective of when they joined the journey of life.

Valuing Diversity Beyond Age

Ageism may seem trivial to some, but it has real implications—on careers, morale, and innovation. When we privilege the young at the cost of wisdom, we limit ourselves collectively. And trust me, we need every ounce of creativity and drive we can muster to tackle the challenges that lie ahead.

In our pursuit of a more inclusive world, let’s champion those voices that have the grit forged through years of experience. Let’s strive to build environments where everyone feels valued, inspired, and encouraged to contribute. After all, who wouldn’t want a wealth of perspectives guiding them?

Let’s Talk

As we consider these points, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Have you ever experienced ageism in your professional life? How did you navigate it? Perhaps it’s time we start these important conversations and take steps toward more inclusive practices. What can you do today to challenge the norms in your workplace or community? I believe we can all play a part in making this change.

So, who’s ready to stand up against ageism and champion a narrative where skills and experience reign over age? Let’s start that conversation now.
