The Unacceptable Challenges Facing SEND in Further Education

Let’s get straight to the point: the challenges facing Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in further education are simply unacceptable. It’s hard to believe that in this day and age, we are seeing mainstream colleges forced to accept students whose needs they cannot adequately support. Over a cup of coffee, it feels just wrong to brush this aside, doesn’t it?

Shocking Realities

Consider these alarming statistics. A staggering 71% of colleges are being told to admit students whose needs they simply cannot accommodate. Picture that for a moment—a college with limited resources and staff is being asked to take on additional students who require specific support. It’s like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

To make things even worse, local authorities are stripping crucial information from Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). This just adds fuel to an already blazing fire. How are colleges supposed to provide proper support when they’re not given the full picture? It’s like sending a ship out to sea without a map.

Funding Issues Piling Up

If you think that’s the end of it, think again. There’s no guarantee that the extra funding allocated for mainstream provision will actually cover the costs. In fact, two-thirds of colleges have reported that the EHCPs they receive are outdated. Can you imagine running a business with outdated information, having to make decisions where accuracy is crucial? The same applies to our colleges—they must have up-to-date information to make informed choices.

And then there’s the Department for Education’s (DfE) approval process for specialist colleges, which lacks transparency. We simply cannot allow bureaucracy to hinder the essential support young people need. Late payments for high needs funding are further complicating matters. Picture a college trying to manage its budget but constantly facing financial unpredictability—it’s a recipe for disaster.

Young Lives at Stake

All of this has humourless consequences. Many young people are becoming NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training) simply because placements aren’t sorted out in a timely fashion. Can we really sit back and let that happen? Young lives are at stake, and it’s our responsibility to advocate for them.

As if the situation wasn’t daunting enough, we are now facing the added complexity of SEND reforms alongside local government reorganisation. When will the chaos end? We need a focused approach that fosters collaboration rather than complicates matters further.
