Is Your Feedback Culture Building Bridges or Creating Walls?

This week at City Skills, we dived into a topic that can make or break the dynamics of any team: feedback culture. Now, you may be wondering, does feedback truly transform teams or merely create tension? The answer lies in how we handle it.

We gathered a group of leaders and took a fresh look at insights from the Behaviour Awareness Tool (BAT) survey. Our goal wasn’t just to understand feedback, but to equip these leaders with practical ways to engage their teams in productive conversations.

The Conversation Challenge: A Game-Changer

Instead of the usual roundtable discussion, we introduced a game called The Conversation Challenge. The room was buzzing with excitement as teams received cards detailing various responses a leader might have to feedback. Their task was straightforward:

  • 🟢 Identify what would encourage open dialogue.
  • 🔴 Recognise what could potentially shut it down and discourage future feedback.

The energy in the room was electric. Teams debated, exchanged viewpoints, and yes, even changed their minds! The competitive spirit was palpable, as everyone was eager to prove their understanding of effective feedback.

But it didn’t stop there. We also presented teams with some negative responses. Their challenge? Transform those responses into constructive, helpful ones while pinpointing the potential damage those initial responses could inflict. And let me tell you, the results were enlightening!

From Reflection to Impact

What struck me most was witnessing leaders reflect on the impact of their words, rather than merely focusing on their intentions. It became clear that the way they approach feedback could either foster connection or incite hesitation.

When someone bravely takes the step to share honest feedback, your response can either strengthen trust or leave them thinking twice about being open in the future. Simply put, the response is where the magic—or sometimes the mayhem—happens.

So, how can we ensure our feedback discussions lead to growth and trust? This is where leaders must step up to model a feedback culture that truly builds bridges.

Practical Steps to Build a Feedback Culture

Here are a few strategies that emerged from our session that can help you cultivate a thriving feedback culture:

  • Encourage Openness: Create an environment where team members feel safe sharing feedback. This means actively inviting input and genuinely considering it.
  • Train on Responses: Just as we did in the Conversation Challenge, practice turning negative feedback into constructive advice. This can be transformative for both leaders and teams.
  • Focus on Listening: Sometimes the best way to respond to feedback is to listen more than you speak. Let your team feel heard and understood.
  • Make It Routine: Don’t save feedback for annual reviews. Integrate it into your team’s regular interactions to normalise the practice.

Just the other day, I was reminded of a time when I received feedback on one of my projects. At first, I was defensive, but when I took the time to reflect, I realised the insights shared could genuinely improve my work. It’s a small moment that has stuck with me, showing the power of how we respond to feedback.

Conclusion: Let’s Keep the Conversation Going

The key takeaway here is that feedback is not just about what is said, but how we respond. By fostering a culture of open dialogue, we create an environment where trust and growth flourish. So I’ll leave you with this question:

How can you ensure your feedback discussions lead to growth and trust within your team?

Let’s keep this conversation going. I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences!
