Student Dashboard – Competencies

🎯 Student Dashboard – Competencies

The Competencies area helps you track your progress against the knowledge, skills, behaviours, and assessment criteria within your apprenticeship. It shows where you already have evidence and highlights any remaining gaps.

📌 What you’ll learn

In this guide, you’ll learn how to access the Competencies area, understand competency gaps, upload evidence, and track your progress towards gateway readiness.

🎥 Watch the walkthrough

1️⃣ Access Competencies

Scroll approximately halfway down your Student Dashboard and click the bullseye icon to open the Competencies section.

This area provides a visual overview of your apprenticeship competency coverage.

2️⃣ Review your competency overview

At the top of the page, you’ll see a summary showing:

  • Total competencies within your programme
  • Competencies already covered
  • Outstanding competency gaps

You can use the filter options to view:

  • All competencies
  • Gaps only
  • Covered competencies only

3️⃣ Understand what competencies are

Competencies are the requirements within your apprenticeship standard.

Depending on your programme, these may include:

  • Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs)
  • Pass criteria
  • Merit criteria
  • Distinction criteria
  • Assessment criteria

🎯 Your goal: By the time you reach gateway, you should have evidence linked to every competency within your programme.

4️⃣ How competencies become covered

Competencies can become covered in two ways:

✅ Automatic coverage

Most competencies are covered automatically when you complete lesson activities, assignments, tasks, and evidence submissions throughout your apprenticeship.

📎 Manual evidence upload

If a competency remains uncovered, you can upload additional evidence manually to demonstrate your competence and close the gap.

5️⃣ Upload evidence to close a gap

  1. Find an uncovered competency
  2. Click Upload Evidence to Close the Gap
  3. Enter a title for your evidence
  4. Select the evidence type
  5. Add a description explaining the evidence to your Development Coach
  6. Optionally upload a supporting file
  7. Click Submit Evidence

💡 The better your description, the easier it is for your Development Coach to understand how the evidence demonstrates the competency.

6️⃣ Evidence review process

Once submitted, your evidence is sent to your Development Coach for review.

✅ If approved

The competency will be marked as covered and turn green, indicating you are now proficient against that requirement.

🔄 If declined

Your Development Coach will provide feedback and explain what additional information or evidence is required before you resubmit.

7️⃣ View existing evidence

For any competency that has already been covered and shows as green:

  1. Click the competency
  2. Select View Submissions
  3. Review the evidence linked to that competency
  4. View any comments or feedback from your Development Coach

💡 Top tip: Check your Competencies section regularly. Identifying and closing gaps early will make your gateway preparation much easier and reduce the risk of delays later in your apprenticeship.
