What are Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs)?
🧩 What are Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs)?
KSBs define what you need to learn and demonstrate during your apprenticeship. Everything you do links back to them.
📌 What you’ll learn
What KSBs are, how they apply to your role, how they are assessed, and how to track your progress in MyPortfolio.
🧠 What are KSBs?
📘 Knowledge
What you need to understand. This could include theories, principles, or information related to your role.
🛠 Skills
What you need to be able to do. These are practical abilities you demonstrate in your job.
💡 Behaviours
How you approach your work. This includes attitudes, professionalism, and how you interact with others.
Together, KSBs define what it means to be competent in your role.
🔍 Real example
For example, if you are managing a project:
- Knowledge: Understanding project planning methods
- Skills: Creating and managing a project plan
- Behaviours: Communicating effectively with stakeholders
🔗 How KSBs are used
Everything in your apprenticeship links back to KSBs:
- Your lessons are designed to develop specific KSBs
- Your submissions are assessed against them
- Your portfolio provides evidence of them
- Your End-Point Assessment tests them
📊 How you are assessed
Different assessment organisations may assess your apprenticeship in slightly different ways.
Some use KSBs directly, while others use pass and distinction descriptors that describe the level of performance expected.
Your course is designed to align with one, the other, or sometimes both, ensuring you are fully prepared for your End-Point Assessment.
📍 Where to track your KSBs
You can track your progress in the Competencies section of your Student Dashboard.
This shows which KSBs you have covered and where you may still have gaps, helping you focus your development.
⚠️ Common mistake: Focusing only on completing tasks instead of understanding how they link to your KSBs.
💡 Top tip: Always ask yourself, “Which KSB does this demonstrate?” That mindset will help you progress faster and build a stronger portfolio.
