What is Gateway?

🚪 What is Gateway?

Gateway is the point where you are formally signed off as ready to take your End-Point Assessment (EPA).

📌 What you’ll learn

What Gateway is, what you need to achieve before it, who signs it off, and what happens next.

🧠 What is Gateway?

Gateway is the final checkpoint in your apprenticeship before you move on to End-Point Assessment.

It confirms that you have developed the required knowledge, skills, and behaviours (KSBs) and are ready to be assessed.

✅ What do you need to reach Gateway?

Before you can go through Gateway, you must:

  • Complete your learning and training programme
  • Submit and pass all required assignments
  • Demonstrate your KSBs through your work and portfolio
  • Be consistently performing in your job role
  • Complete any required qualifications (if applicable)
  • Complete your planned off-the-job training (OTJ)

✍️ Who signs off Gateway?

Gateway is a joint decision between:

  • You – confirming you feel ready
  • Your employer – confirming you are competent in your role
  • Your Development Coach – confirming you meet the apprenticeship requirements

➡️ What happens after Gateway?

Once Gateway is signed off, you move into your End-Point Assessment (EPA).

This is where an independent assessor will evaluate your competence through a range of assessment methods.

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Rushing towards Gateway without completing all work properly
  • Not keeping portfolio evidence up to date
  • Not being confident in your role at work
  • Waiting too late to prepare for EPA
  • Not logging your off-the-job training (OTJ)

💡 Top tip: Gateway isn’t something you aim for at the end. If you stay on top of your work, development, and OTJ logging, you’ll naturally be ready when the time comes.
