What is End-Point Assessment (EPA)?

🏁 What is End-Point Assessment (EPA)?

End-Point Assessment is the final stage of your apprenticeship, where you demonstrate that you are fully competent in your role.

📌 What you’ll learn

What EPA is, what it involves, when it happens, and how to prepare for it.

🧠 What is EPA?

EPA is the final assessment at the end of your apprenticeship. It confirms that you have developed the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed for your job.

It is carried out by an independent assessor, not your training provider.

🚪 What is Gateway?

Before you can take EPA, you must pass through Gateway.

This is the point where you, your employer, and your Development Coach agree that you are ready for final assessment.

Once Gateway is signed off, you move on to EPA.

🧩 What does EPA include?

The exact assessment methods depend on your apprenticeship standard, but typically include:

  • A project or work-based assignment
  • A professional discussion or interview
  • Evidence from your portfolio

These are examples. Some apprenticeships may also include other methods such as multiple-choice tests (MCQs), presentations, or practical observations.

🎯 What are the outcomes?

  • Pass
  • Merit (available on some apprenticeship standards)
  • Distinction (for high performance)

💡 Top tip: Don’t wait until Gateway to prepare. Everything you do throughout your apprenticeship builds towards EPA.
