What is Off-the-Job Training (OTJ)?

📚 What is Off-the-Job Training (OTJ)?

Off-the-job training is the time you spend learning during your working hours, helping you build the knowledge and skills needed for your role.

📌 What you’ll learn

What OTJ training is, what counts, what doesn’t, and how to make the most of it.

🧠 What does OTJ mean?

Off-the-job training is any learning that takes place during your normal working hours that helps you develop your skills.

You’ll typically complete around 6 hours per week of OTJ as part of your apprenticeship.

✅ What counts as OTJ?

  • Attending training sessions or workshops
  • Completing assignments or coursework
  • Shadowing colleagues
  • Learning new systems or processes
  • Coaching or mentoring sessions

❌ What doesn’t count?

  • Your normal day-to-day job tasks
  • Breaks or travel time
  • Work that doesn’t develop new skills

💡 Top tip: If it helps you learn something new, it probably counts. If it’s just your normal job, it doesn’t.
